Chapter thirty-three

LAUREN

The day I saw the pair of Gemini Birds, with their bright yellow chest and chocolate wings, fluttering around the foot of a pine tree at the Stockton Centre site felt like Christmas morning. Not only did it prove I was right, but now I could in no uncertain terms tell Tony Mansfield to go fuck himself. Maybe not in those words, but in sentiment at least. Not to mention how happy Andrew would be. The tiny pair of brown and yellow birds might just be enough to save Stockton from becoming home to a tacky parade of five-star wannabes with no regard and no idea about what remained at the heart of this pretty coastal village.

The first thing I did was pull out my phone and record a video of them. I smiled as the male strutted his stuff, prancing and fanning his tail to impress the female. She was doing a good job of acting disinterested but there was no doubt in my mind they would become a mating pair. Birds weren’t all that different from humans when it came to dating. The male would chase while the female feigned indifference, making sure he worked for it. That’s how it was supposed to go apparently. But as far as I was concerned there was no time for games like that. Once I knew what I wanted I did everything in my power to make it happen. I wasn’t the type of woman to make a man dance for my attention.

When I was sure I had enough footage, I called Andrew but when he didn’t answer I left a voicemail telling him I’ found the birds and had video evidence. I hung up and smiled to myself. Thanks to these precious little birds, saving Stockton was all but a done deal. The presence of the birds coupled with the very idea that Tony Mansfield could be corrupt was all it would take to void the application. We had done it.

Unable to help myself I also sent a text to Tony Mansfield. I knew I shouldn’t but the thought of his face screwing up when he saw it was too delicious to resist.
